WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) – More students are applying to go to school at U-W Marathon County.

The university is reporting that applications are up 12 percent over last year and that more students are being admitted. Admission is up nine percent over to 478 students.

Making it easier for students to transfer credits to a four-year school is one reason applications are up, said dean Sandy Smith. She said the school has created areas of academic emphasis.

An emphasis is a concentration of credits in a given academic field. It is designed to give students an advantage in applying for some jobs or a head start toward a major if they transfer to a four-year campus.

Smith also said the college is affordable for students looking for a higher education.

Tuition at UWMC has been frozen the last three years, making it the lowest in the UW System at $4,268 per year.
