The Marathon County sheriff's department is looking to purchase this Sandcat model armored truck from the Oshkosh Corporation.
WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) – Marathon County's sheriff department will not get $150,000 for a new armored truck from a contingency fund but will have to ask for the money in next year's budget.
The county board voted 17-16 to postpone a decision on transferring the money from its contingency fund.
“That's for emergencies,” said board supervisor Jim Schaefer, who suggested the county not take any action Tuesday.
Schaefer, who chairs the county's public safety committee, did not think there was enough board support to approve the transfer. He supports buying a new truck but wanted the department to follow the process in asking for the money.
The department has a $100,000 grant for the truck and needed the $150,000 to pay for the $250,000 vehicle.
Sheriff Randy Hoenisch said he is willing to wait until the board approves the 2011 budget in November.
The truck, made by Oshkosh Defense, will be fully ballistic capable, meaning it can defend special response team members from high-powered weapons, including military grade rifles. Having the truck in Wausau will allow SWAT team members to respond more quickly rather than wait for the closest truck nearly two hours away in Rhinelander.
