Give Kids a Smile

STEVENS POINT, Wis. (WSAU) – Dentists across central and northern Wisconsin will be donating their time and efforts today to help kids in need of dental care get treatment.

The program is called Give Kids a Smile, and it's run by the Wisconsin Dental Association each year. Dr. Michael Schmidt and his team at Midwest Dental in Stevens Point will be treating 9 3rd graders this year. The students were picked from a group of all the county's third graders by a team of hygienists from the county health department. As well, several hundred other students will be getting lessons in oral hygiene and getting home sealants.

Schmidt says it's important to get kids a chance to have healthy teeth at an early age, since most of their future dental work will be based on how well their teeth are treated when they first come in. The students Schmidt will be treating today will be getting full cleanings, fillings as needed, and fluoride treatment.

This is Schmidt's tenth year in the program and he says across the area Midwest Dental will be providing help and assistance to several hundred children.
