MADISON, Wis. (Midwest Communications) - State Assembly Speaker Mike Sheridan left out some required details from the campaign finance report he filed this week. The Janesville Democrat said he reimbursed himself $5,600 for campaign travel from last July through December – but he didn’t say how the money was spent. His spokeswoman, Rebekah Sweeney, said Sheridan would amend his report, and include the required details as soon as possible. She didn’t say how the $5,600 was spent – but none of it was used on expenses for Shanna Wycoff, the lobbyist Sheridan was recently dating.
He’s been taking heat for that, because Wycoff is opposing a bill to set interest limits for payday loans – and Sheridan softened his previous support for the bill last fall. Sheridan insists his change of heart had nothing to do with his dating Wycoff, and he promised that a strong bill would go up for a vote before the current session ends. His fellow Assembly Democrats say they’re standing behind Sheridan. But Mike McCabe of the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign says the public will never buy his claim that his relationship had no effect on the issue.
