Hoops Mania Posted 22 hours, 52 minutes ago by Tom King

Well let's see...the NCAA field is set and Wisconsin & Marquette are in...The Pointers are in the D-3 Final Four...The field is set for the Boys Highschool State Tournament and Girls sectionals....and the Bucks just keep rolling....yeah it must be the middle of March.

Badger fans know where Wofford is after facing them in the football season. Could be an interesting 2nd round matchup with Temple or Cornell. It's the 12th consecutive appearance for the Badgers...the days of hoops futility in Madison seem like ancient history.

The Pointers keep rolling and Bob Semling's crew heads to Salem Virginia for a friday matchup with Randolph-Macon. Threre is a fan bus heading to the games and you can call the UWSP ticket office at (715) 346-4100 if you want more info.

The Badger hockey team punched their ticket to the WCHA Final Five at the Excel Energy Center. The will face St. Cloud State Friday afternoon.

The Bucks went 4-0 on their homestand and are 6 games over .500.It's the first time since 2002 they are that much over the .500 mark. They head west now for three games in LA (Clippers), Sacramento and Denver. I won bid for four Bucks tickets at an auction to benefit Wisconsin valley Lutheran High School Saturday Night...unfortunately they are not until next season.

Congrats to the Antigo Red Robins as they earn a trip to the Boys High School State Tournament. They play Appleton East on Thursday afternoon. There are also some good matchups in the girls sectionals this week.  Wausau West faces Marshfield while  Rapids plays Oshkosh West in D-1....Medford-Witt/Birn square off in D-2...and you can catch two of the top girls teams in the state face-off Thursday night at the Wausau East gym as Wausau Newman play Rapids Assumption.

We geat another look at Chris Narveson today as he starts for the Brewers against Cleveland. He's pitched very well this spring and is strongly in the mix to make the team. We have seen enough of Jeff Suppan as he gave up four home runs yesterday. Can we just cut out losses and say goodbye..please...

The Packers have reportedly re-signed Mark Tauscher. he is on vacation out of the country but is expected back this week to sign a two-year deal. Obviously a good move.

Songs of The Day-  (from my I-pod)

The End of The Innocence-Don Henley (1989) the title track from Henley's thrid solo Lp was written by Bruce Hornsby with added lyrics from Henley. You can clearly hear Hornsby's piano work on this one.

The End Of the World-Skeeter Davis (1962) Henley was probably listening to this as a kid in Texas....this huge hit for Davis was produced by Chet Atkins and a perfect example of the slick Nashville sound of the day which turned into pop success for alot of country singers.

Not The End Of The World Posted 2 days, 20 hours ago by Tom King

The Badger basketball team was ice-cold for most of the game yesterday and lost to Illinois in the Big Ten Tournament. I know Bo Ryan will whip his troops at practice this week but the way I look at it...it's not that bad. Conference tournaments are really only important for bubble teams or those tring to get into the NCAA Tournament. Illinois had much more to play for...add that to Hughes & Bohannon both having tough shooting days...and it equals a first round exit...which for me means an extra two days of rest to prepare for the Big Dance. Hughes also got kneed in the thigh early in the game and wasnt right until he nailed a few three 's late. Take their spirited comeback which put them in a position to tie with 11 seconds left as a better indicator than the loss itself.

The Packers signed Nick Collins & Ryan Pickett to long-term contracts yesterday...Collins for three years, Pickett for 4.

The Bucks win again! Against another good team! Milwaukee has won 11 of 12 after topping Utah last night. John Salmons has been a revalation for the Bucks.

The Brewers hammered the Cubs yesterday as they got back-to-back homers from vets Jim Edmonds and Gregg Zaun. The Brewers could do alot worse than Edmonds on the bench this year. And Zaun is an improvement over Kendall. They also are getting excellent pitching for the most part this spring.

MLB Network was showing the 1975 All-Star game from County Stadium in Milwaukee yesterday. I was there as an 18 year old sitting in the upper deck and watching one of the greatest collection of talent you can imagine. Morgan, Rose, Garvey, Cey, Bench, Aaron, Yaz, Reggie, Munson, Carew, Nolan Ryan, Seaver, Brock,...the list went on and on. and the swings and pitching motions of these star players was much different than you see now....just a different philosphy on how to do it.  Yaz hit a three run homer but the NL prevailed. Henry Kissinger threw out the first pitch . It was also interesting hearing Curt Gowdy, Joe Garagiola and Tony Kubek call the game.  It was a two hour trip in a time machine...I love MLB netwok.

How about Antigo and Merrill squaring off in the D-1 boys basketball sectional championship game and a trip to State. I don't know for sure but if I had to guess...i would say it has never happened before. They play in Marshfield tonight at 7.

Songs of The Day  (from my I-pod)

Eminence Front-The Who (1982) Pete Townsend takes lead vocals on this one. it's hypnotic keyboard pattern is used by many sports teams while introducing lineups. Check out the youthful lloking Townsend in this video compared to this years Super Bowl.

Emotional Rescue-Rolling Stones (1980) the disco-flavored title track from a number 1 Lp because let's face it...when you come right down to it...the Stones are a dance band.

Another Honor For Suzy Posted 3 days, 22 hours ago by Tom King

Suzy Favor-Hamilton dominated the cross country and track worlds in the state of Wisconsin during her high school years at SPASH . She's being honored for those achievements by her induction to the National Federation of State High School Associations Hall of Fame. Favor -Hamilton won four WIAA State Cross Country championships and holds the state record for the fastest time on the 3200 meter course....In track she won the 1600 meter run at State four consecutive years and also claimed titles in the 800, 1600 relay and 3200 relay. She still holds the state 800-meter record set 24 years ago.  Of course after leaving Stevens Point she won nine NCAA titles at Wisconsin and was named Big Ten Athlete of the DECADE for the 90's. She also ran in three Olympics and was ranked 1st in the United States five times She is the first female from Wisconsin inducted into this Hall and just the 3rd athlete ever. The others are Alan Ameche and Elroy Hirsch. And she handled her success and her struggles with grace. I had the chance to interview her a couple of times and she was always pleasant...trust me not all world class athletes are that way. She currently lives in the Madison area and works in real estate while also mentoring young runners and doing motivational speaking as well. She will be inducted with three others this summer in San Diego.

Is there enough to choose from today? Wisconsin-Illinois and Marquette-Georgetown this afternoon, Badger Hockey vs Alaska-Anchorage tonight....the Pointer men & women in the D-3 Sweet Sixteen tonight...the men hosting Texas-Dallas while the women are at Illinois Wesleyan...the Bucks Utah before heading west...The High school boys sectionals tonight including Antigo-EC North & Merrill-Superior at Marshfield....Marathon plays Three Lakes... Wausau Newman plays Green Lake at the Wausau East gym. And the Brewers play the Cubs this afternoon.

If youre a Rummage Sale fan be aware that Wisconsin Valley Lutheran High School is having a big Sale this Saturday 10-4 and Sunday 1-4 and also the following weekend as well at the school. Take the Maple Ridge Road exit off I-39 just north of Mosinee and follow the signs. it's located at the east end of Maple Ridge Road.

Songs of The Day  (from my I-pod)

Eli's Coming-Laura Nyro (1968) Three Dog Night had the hit but I prefer the original by the woman who wrote it. She wrote a bunch of hits for other people and once considered becoming the lead singer with Blood, Sweat & Tears. David Geffen talked her out of it and they hired David Clayton-Thomas instead.

Emerald Eyes-Fleetwood Mac (1973) From a forgotten gem of an album "Mystery to Me" comes this Bob Welch tune. This is the pre Lindsay-Stevie Mac in which Welch and Christine McVie did most of the heavy lifting. I can't find a video for this one unfortunately.

Let Madness Reign Posted 4 days, 23 hours ago by Tom King

March Madness really starts today as the Big Ten Tournament begins. A number of teams have clinched spots in the NCAA Tournament with wins in their conference tournaments this week. None of them really have any chance of winning the gold ball or even going deep in the tournament...but for some Big Ten teams (I'm looking at you Illinois) the only way into the Big Dance is winning the conference tournament. Wisconsin will play the Illini Friday afternoon at 2pm CST. The first round games today are Michigan-Iowa, Northwestern-Indiana and Minnesota-Penn State.

The Brewers probable Opening Day starter Yovanni Gallardo struggled yesterday giving up 3 runs on 3 hits and 2 walks in 3 innings of work. No worries yet...let's see how he rebounds in his next start. The Brewers play split squad action today against Oakland and Cincy.

One of the best players in the late 90's & early 2000's retired yesterday. Nomar Garciaparra played 14 years, eight in Boston and along with Derek Jeter was one of the premier shortstops in the game. Wrist injuries derailed a probable Hall-of-Fame career. He was a six-time all-star and hit .313 with 229 homers, and 936 RBI's

The high school girls basketball tournament continues tonight in Divisions 2,3 & 4. Area games include Waupaca at New London, Mosinee at Medford, Lakeland at Witt/Birn, Nekoosa at Westfield, Auburndale at Marathon, Amherst at Edgar, Menominee Indian at Gillet, Weyawega-Fremont at Markesan, Colby at fall Crek, Spencer at Neillsville, Phelps at Wausau Newman, Gresham at Wabeno, Tigerton at Rapids Assumption, Rosholt at Almond-Bancroft,Rib Lake at Prentice, Gilman at Butternut, Loyal at Owen-Withee and Greenwood at MArshfield Columbus.

Songs of the Day  (from my-ipod)

The Elements-Tom Lehrer (1959) The master parodist enumerates the periodic table sung to the tune of The Major General's Song from "The Pirates of Penzance" . His stuff was a subversive antidote to the stifiling Eisenhower years.

Electric Blue-Icehouse (1987) a synth-pop hit co-written by John Oates. In fact, if this Aussie band wouldn't have recorded it, Hall & Oates would have. Nice mullet!

Have Mercy Posted 5 days, 23 hours ago by Tom King

With the High School winter season coming to a close in the next couple of weeks some in the WIAA are looking at competiton issues in basketball. Associate Director Deb Hauser thinks that high school basketball in the state should have a mercy rule like some other sports do to avoid scores like 105-18 and 63-6 (both of which we've seen this year). Hockey has a running clock in the final period of a game with a 6 goal differential...soccer, baseball & softball have a mercy rule as well. some coaches don't like the idea...they use blowout games to get the reserves some playing time. I understand both points of view but I don't think a running clock in basketball is the answer. The object of sports is to compete and do the best you can. Teams that are injured or undermanned have always been around. The players on those teams know going in that the chances of winning are slight...in fact the chances of getting blown out of the building is much greater. I think you use that fact as a motivator to get better. Now I have seen teams try and run up a score....putting on a full court press when the game is safely in hand. Those coaches will say they need to keep their players sharp and they leave their starters in to build endurance for closer games down the line. I understand that as well but remember....the shoe might be on the other foot some day...even the best programs go through talent droughts. Remember karma....what goes around, comes around.

The Bucks get another signature win topping Boston last night at the Bradley Center. Bogut was huge again and don't discount what Carlos Delfino has brought to the team. Loved to see Brandon Jennings throw down on "Big Baby" Davis as well. The Bucks moved into the 5th spot and face the ailing celtics 2 more times and could face them in the first round of the playoffs. It's a long way to playoff time but I wouldnt want to play the Bucks right now.

Nick Collins wants to be a Packer. He passed up free agency to sign a one year tender offer with the Pack. Now he will make over three million dollars this year but he is risking an injury until a long term deal is signed. I think the Pack want to keep collins and will sign him to an extended deal at some point.

Songs of The Day (from my I-pod)

El Condor Pasa-Simon & Garfunkel (1970) long before he dabbled in African and New Orleans Rythmns Simon added English lyrics to an old Peruvian folk song. It became a hit.

Eleanor Rigby-Beatles (1966) a Paul McCartney tune from "Revolver" which was unique as no Beatles played instruments on the song. A George Martin directed double string quartet made this sound like nothing on pop radio at the time. McCartney would usually compose the music first and the lyrics later. For this one he picked some of the names (like Father MacKensie...from the phone book)

The Brewers Will Be Better Posted 6 days, 22 hours ago by Tom King

I watched some of the Brewer game from Phoenix yesterday and outside of the fact that it's great to have baseball back...it's also great to see that Mark Attanasio is willing to spend some money to improve the Brewers. A few months ago it seemed inconcievable that Prince Fielder would be back with the Brewers after his contract expires in two years.....now it will be a surprise if he doesnt sign a long term deal well before that. The Brewers have improved their pitching staff with Wolf, Davis and Schowenweis...they improved at catcher with Gregg Zaun and with a healthy Rickie Weeks combined with Alcides Escobar and Carlos Gomez they are a much faster team as well. Going into yesterday's game they had 8 stolen bases in 4 games and had yet to be caught. If you are a Brewer fan you should be excited about this season and a return to the playoffs. you can hear the games on WSAU and WSAU-FM.

The girls high school basketball tournament begins tonight. You can hear a Doubleheader on our sister station Foxsports1390WRIG . I'll have the Wausau East-Eau Claire North game live with pregame programming at 6:30...the tip set for 7. That will be followed by the DC Everest-Eau Claire Memorial game as the 2nd game of the DH.

Songs of the Day (from my Ipod)

Eggplant-Michael Franks (1976) from his fabulous debut "The Art Of Tea" came this whimsical love song featuring the solid jazz backing of The Crusaders. If you want to relax...put on a Franks disc and be slowly lifted away. Here is a stripped down live version without the keyboards.

Eight Miles High-The Byrds (1966) written about their tour of England in 1965 and incorporating some of the influence of the Ravi Shankar and John Coltrane music they were listening to at the time. A slice of psychedelia well before the "Summer Of Love"

Close But.... Posted 1 week ago by Tom King

The Wausau West & CW Storm could not finish their quest for State Titles in hockey. The Storm lost in the semi-finals on Friday. The Warriors made it to the championship game before losing to University School. U-School had started the season slowly and were beaten handily by West in early December....but righted their ship and beat both Green Bay Notre Dame and Wausau West to win the crown.  i'm not one of those people that believe if you don't win the championship, the season is a disappointment. Especially at the high school level, the journey is as important as the the result.  Winning a title is hard. If you give your best effort and fall short....there is no shame in that.

The Pointer men & women's basketball teams advance to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA D-3 Tournament. the men will host this weekend...the women head to Bloomington, Illinois.

The Badger men's basketball team beat Illinois yesterday. They are the 4 seed for this week's Big Ten tournament. The Badger men's hockey team lost to Minnesota yesterday. They host Alaska-Anchorage this weekend in the WCHA tournament.

The season came to an end for the Central Wisconsin Saints of the Great Lakes Hockey Junior League. They dropped 2 of 3 games in Kenosha to the Wisconsin Rampage.

The Bucks beat Cleveland on Saturday....Lebron didn't play.

Songs of The Day (from my I-pod)

Edge Of Seventeen-Stevie Nicks (1981) from her solid solo Lp "Bella Donna" came this tune written after the death of her uncle and John Lennon in the same week.

Edith and The Kingpin-Joni Mitchell (1975) after the success of "Court & Spark", Joni returned with "the Hissing Of Summer Lawns" which wasn't as enthusiacticly recieved. This is a jazzy tune from that album.

What A Weekend For The Warriors Posted 1 week, 3 days ago by Tom King

You'll excuse Wausau West sports fans if they don't know which way to turn this weekend. Many of course will be in Madison as the West boys and the CW Storm play in the state hockey tournament. Across town the wrestling team will compete in the state team championships...while the boys basketball team continues tournament play Saturday night against Merrill in D-1 tournament play. The girls basketball team won their regular season finale last night and get set for their tournament opener next Tuesday against winless Rhinelander. It's one of those years where the athletic talent has coalesced into winning teams all over the place. Enjoy the ride...it's over too soon.

Wins and Losses in the early spring training games don't mean anything. Teams are experimenting with players and leaving some pitchers in too long to get their work in.The Brewers lost to the Giants in the Cactus League opener yesterday but there were alot of good signs. Rickie Weeks had a couple of hits and RBI's coming back from injury as Milwaukee pounded out 10 hits through the first 5 innings. Jeff Suppan pitcher 2 scoreless innings...Todd Coffey and Scott Schoeneweis added scoreless frames. A pitcher that will not make the team gave up most of the runs. Yovanni Gallardo gets the start today against Ben Sheets and the A's.

The D-3 hoops tournament begins today. The Pointer men host Carleton College tonight at the Quandt Fieldhouse. The women play Minnesota-Morris at De-Pere.

After a layoff of a couple of weeks the Central Wisconsin Saints Junior Hockey team begin tournament play tonight in the Great Lakes League. It's a best of three series in Kenosha against the Wisconsin Rampage. I'll be with the team watching my son play this weekend so I won't be posting until Monday. Enjoy Your weekend.

Songs of the Day  (from my I-Pod)

Ebony Eyes-Bob Welch (1977) the former guitarist from Fleetwood Mac hit big with his "French Kiss" Lp. The shimmering pop tunes were perfect for the radio. Check out the hair and clothes in this promotional video for the tune....this is pre-MTV. Notice his record company also spelled his name wrong!

Ebony Eyes-Everly Brothers (1961) A totally different song. It's one of those "death"songs that were popular in the 50's and late 60's. Here's a medley from their reunion show in London.

Something "Fishy" in Milwaukee Posted 1 week, 4 days ago by Tom King

The Bucks aquired John Salmons from the Bulls a couple of weeks ago. Since then, Milwaukee has lost only once and Salmons is a big reason why. Scott Skiles knew that if the Bucks were going to take the next step they needed to get bigger at the guard spot. Salmons brings size and he also brings the ability and detrmination to get to the rim. He doesnt settle for jump shots and to find an NBA guy who is willing, especially late in games to go the hole is a rare thing. The Bucks have a nice mix of vets and young guys and Scott Skiles has them playing defense. They are no longer fighting for the last playoff spot but can actually move up to the 5th spot this week. They could prove to be a tough opponent in a playoff series.

Iowa couldnt put up much of a fight against Wisconsin last night. Jon Leuer is back in shape and put up 18 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists ansd 3 steals in a 67-40 win. Bucky finishes the regular season Sunday at Illinois.

Wausau West begins their state hockey tournament run today against Wisconsin Rapids. Rapids comes out of the weakest regional and is a decided underdog to the loaded Warriors. It's a strong field at the Alliant Energy featuring West, EC Memorial, Green Bay Notre Dame, Stoughton, Madison Edgewood & University School.

Baseball is back! Spring Training games are available on the MLB Network and the Brewers begin games today agains San Francisco. Box scores are back. This is the 30th anniversary of the invention of Fantasy baseball which started the fantasy sports craze.  I've played since the mid-80's and look forward to the draft every year. Some people are addicted to video games or on-line poker...I'll take fantasy baseball. And the reason that Fantasy baseball has it over other  fantasy sports is that there is action every day. But, it should be a personal thing. Nobody else wants to hear about your fantasy sports team...really...it's boring to other people...trust me on this.

We have a girls basketball doubleheader tonight on Foxsports1390 WRIG as the regular season comes to an end.  First up is DC Everest vs Wausau West followed by Wausau East at Rhinelander.

Songs of the Day  (from my I-POD)

Easy Money-Rickie Lee Jones (1979) a breezy heist tune from her debut. Jones exploded on the LA scene in the late 70's, appeared on SNL and sold out shows at Carnegie Hall. She still tours and records.

Ebb Tide-Righteous Brothers (1965) the combo of Bill Medley (low voice) and Bobby Hatfield (high voice) was a winner. Hatfield (from Beaver Dam) wails on this one.

The Old Man on The Ice Posted 1 week, 5 days ago by Tom King

Chris Chelios is back in the NHL! The defenseman singed with the Atlanta Thrashers yesterday after spending the last few months with their top farm club in Chicago. Chelios is fourth in games played all-time and is an 11 time all-star. He has won three Stanley Cups and three  time Norris Trophy winner as the top defenseman in the league. He won a national Championship at Wisconsin in 1983! This will be his 26th year in the NHL. What's even more amazing is, he can still play. He currently has a plus-35 rating. The plus-minus rating is a measurement for defenseman. You get a point if youre on the ice when your team scores a goal...lose a point when youre on the ice and the other team scores. He also is a hard-nosed player reflected by his 2900 penalty minutes...almost two whole days in the box...over the course of his career.

Marquette was looking for one more signature win to get them into the NCAA men's basketball tournament. They got it last night hammering Louisville.

The Badgers and Bucks are back in action tonight...Wisconsin plays Iowa on WSAU while the Bucks host Washington on Foxsports1390 WRIG.

First round winners in high school boys basketball last night include Wausau West, Marshfield, Merrill, Stevens Point, Wisconsin Rapids, Adams-Friendship, Witt-Birn, Lakeland, Medford, Northland Pines, New London, Colby, Flambeau, Stanley-Boyd, Amherst, Auburndale, Edgar, Marathon, Three Lakes, Weyawega-Fremont, Wild Rose, Athens, Gilman, Greenwood, Marshfield Columbus, Prentice, Rib Lake, Bowler, Green Lake, Port Edwards, Rosholt, Wabeno, White Lake. Round 2 is Saturday.

Songs of The Day (from my I-pod)

East of the Sun, West of The Moon-Diana Krall (2002) the Canadian pianist lends her warm vocals to a tune from the Great American Songbook. Her Live in Paris cd is outstanding. One of those odd romantic music matchups...she's married to Elvis Costello.

Easy Livin-Uriah Heep (1972) a hit for the English rock band from their breakthrough Lp "Demons & Wizards". The artwork on the LPs was sometimes more interesting than the music.

Pointers Head To The Dance Posted 1 week, 6 days ago by Tom King

The NCAA  Division Three basketball Tournament field was set yesterday and both the UWSP men & women will be in action this Friday in  first round games. The men will host Carleton College. Its part of a doubleheader at the Quandt Fieldhouse. The other game is St Norbert vs Hope College of Michigan. Carthage and Whitewater will be the other teams from Wisconsin in the men's draw.

The Pointer women will play Minnesota-Morris in a first round game at De Pere. The other Wisconsin teams earning bids include Whitewater, Carthage, Northland, St. Norbert and Lakeland.

The Badger Mens basketball team moved up in the latest poll....15th in the ap poll and 17th in the coahes poll. They finish the regular season this week against Iowa on Wednesday and Illinois on Sunday.

Congrats to Owen-Withee girls basketball coach Al Guthman. He reached a milestone with last nights victory. Guthman has tied the record for wins in girls hoops at 587 and is third overall on the wins list, boys & girls included. He has coached for 39 years.

Last year Wausau East faced Eau Claire North in the sectional championship and came up short. This year the injury plagued Lumberjacks face the Huskies in a first round game. It's a tough matchup for East who have had a mjor problem scoring points this season. It won't help that North will have Badger recruit Evan Anderson under the hoop to ready to swat away anything that comes his way. I'll have the game as part 2 of our doubleheader on Foxsports1390 WRIG tonight. Game 1 has DC Everest traveling to River Falls. Wausau West has been playing well and they are a 3 seed hosting Menominee tonight. You can see all of the first round matchups in our sports section of this website.

Songs of The Day (from my I-Pod)

Early Mornin Rain-Gordon Lightfoot (1966) he recorded it on his first LP but fellow Canadians Ian & Sylvia recorded it first and brought it to popular attention. It was grabbed by many artists including Judy Collins, Dylan and even Elvis.

Ease On Down The Road-Michael Jackson & Diana Ross (1978) from the movie version of "The Wiz" which featured Ross as Dorothy and Jackson as the Scarecrow. This infectious tune filled dance floors at the height of the disco craze.

The Kid Delivers Posted 2 weeks ago by Tom King

He's got the whiff of destiny on him. Sidney Crosby has been successful on the ice since he was a small child. Go to any hockey game and you can spot the players that have that little extra something....that sets them apart from the rest. Crosby has that 'it' factor and cashed it in on the biggest hockey stage yesterday, scoring the OT gamewinner as Team Canada wins gold at the Olympics. Team USA had held him in check yesterday until Jarome Inginla fed him off the boards and he wristed a laser through the "five-hole" on Team USA goalie Ryan Miller. The Americans had the momentum...thay had scored the tying goal with just 24 seconds remaining in regulation...and they had Miller in goal. To show how dominating Miller had been, he was named the MVP of the tournament. Goal-scorers always seem to get the puck where they need it. what you don't notice is the work it took to get to that spot and then the ability of to seal the deal. You can compare him to Gretzky or Lemieux but from now on any young phenom in Canada will be compared to Sir Sidney.

Long-time NHL executive made an interesting comment during the pre-game show yesterday. He said that only 2 players on Team USA would have even made the roster of the Canadian team. He didn't say who (Parise, Kane Or Miller?) but that shows what the American team was able to accomplish against a more skilled foe. Our guys (Pavelski, Rafalski & Suter played very well) hurt now but will look back on this silver medal as a major accomplishment.

The Pointer men's and women's basketball teams both won their conference tournaments on Saturday and now await their seeding in the NCAA D-3 tournament which will come today.

Congrats to Zach Zehner of Tomahawk and Dylan Iczkowski of Mosinee as they won State Titles in Wrestling over the weekend.

The field is set for the state hockey tournament which begins on Thursday at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison. Wausau West will meet Wisconsin Rapids at 1:15. The other games have Superior vs Eau Claire Memorial, Stoughton vs University School and Green Bay Notre Dame vs Madison Edgewood. With the exception of the upstarts from Rapids it looks like an incredibly strong field. The Central Wisconsin Storm will play on Friday at State taking on Green Bay East.

The pairings are set for the girls basketball tournament which begins next week.

MArshfield,Medford, Witt/Birn, Auburndale, Wausau Newman, Rapids Assumption, Prentice & Owen/Withee have number 1 seeds. The first round games look like this

Songs Of The Day (from my I-pod)

Dust My Broom-Elmore James (1952) "The King of The Slide Guitar" had been playing for a long time when he had a hit with this tune which he might have written or might have stolen from Robert Johnson.

Early In The Morning-Gap Band (1982) who would have thought that one of the biggest funk bands of the 80's would come from Tulsa Oklahoma. Their stuff has been sampled by many hip-hoppers.
